Manual steering box source
« on: January 18, 2010, 09:52:48 AM »
Anyone know of a source for new/rebuilt manual steering boxes for a '65?  I am working on James Scarboro's car, and the original manual steering box is worn out.  Not having any success finding a souce for one.  I did find a place that said they could rebuild it, but with a 4-week turnaround.  Would like to find one to do the exchange thing so it doesn't take so long.

Brian,

Have you contacted this company,  Power Steering Services, Inc.? www.powersteering.com  They also rebuilt manual steering boxes, but I do not know if they have one to swap with you. Might be worth contacting them.

Don't know how concearned that James is with originality but you might also have him consider upgrading to a quicker ratio box.

Dan on this site (dsags) has been down this road already and I'm sure he would be willing to fill you in with the details of this swap if you guys decided to go in this direction.

Just talked to Lares and they have it on the shelf.  They also have the fast ratio box and the correct rag joint to adapt it to the column.  I will talk to James and see which way he wants to go.
My experience is that these cars are nearly impossible to steer in a parking lot with the factory 6 turns box, so won't putting a faster ratio box in it just make it even harder to steer?

Yes. Tire selection can effect required steering effort too. Wide radials take more effort to turn than narrow bias plies.
