Posi was an option.
In fact, there was a short time when the posi was NOT available!
I have a document from Buick stating the posi option, G4, is again available effective Feb 23, 1965.

One further thing to mention is that all 65 GS's did receive a special rear end that included hardened parts, however the posi was an option.

I've seen documentation that shows what a difficult decision it was for Buick as some did want it to be standard however it never made it for 65.

Thanks for the info. I was wondering if someone swapped the rearend on my gs. Does anyone know if a kit is made for these rears to convert them to posi?

Yes, they are available, but expensive!
From the latest Jegs catalog:
Eaton offers a posi unit for $560.
Auburn Gear has them for $422.

I'd strongly suggest contacting Jim 'Monzaz'. He posts frequently on the V8Buick.com site, and also has his own website here:
http://www.jdrace.com/

It's possible he has something used or rebuilt he will sell you for a better price.
He can generally match or beat prices from Jegs/Summit. In addition, he knows Buicks, so he can set you up with the correct bearings and seals you will need to complete the install
